Description

These Blazing Star Flower seeds, scientifically known as Liatris spicata, produce perennial plants characterized by tall, spiky, fluffy flower heads that bloom sequentially from the top of the stem downward, creating a bottlebrush-like appearance. The flowering stems reach heights of 2 to 3 feet, with the flower itself extending up to 6 feet, depending on growing conditions. The flowers are available in shades of purple, pink, or white, and bloom during the summer and fall seasons. These flowers attract hummingbirds, bees, butterflies, and other pollinators, making them ideal for wildlife gardens.

  • Heat, drought, frost, and cold tolerant!—ideal for diverse climates
  • Cold stratification recommended for best germination; seed germinates in 21-35 days at soil temperatures of 65-75°F
  • Requires light exposure for germination; lightly cover seeds or surface sow
  • Prefers well-drained soils including clay, sandy, loamy, rocky, or chalky types with pH 5.5–7.5
  • Water needs are average; full sun exposure enhances growth and flowering

Use Cases

  • Apply organic mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds

  • Grows best with moderate watering; avoid overwatering to prevent root rot
  • No specific fertilizer required; Supplemental feeding can promote vigorous growth
  • Seedlings can be transplanted after the last frost date in spring or fall

The Blazing Star/Gayfeather flower (Liatris spicata) produces a long, spiky, fluffy flower that begins blooming at the top of the stem, working its way down until it looks like a wild bottlebrush. Safe Seed Pledge

    OUR PLEDGE TO YOU

Agriculture and seeds provide the basis upon which our lives depend. We must protect this foundation as a safe and genetically stable source for future generations.

For the benefit of all farmers, gardeners and consumers who want an alternative. We pledge to you that we do not knowingly buy or sell genetically engineered seeds or plants.  The mechanical transfer of genetic material outside of natural reproductive methods and between genera, families or kingdoms, poses great biological risks as well as economic, political, and cultural threats.

We wish to support agricultural progress that leads to healthier soils, genetically diverse agricultural ecosystems and ultimately healthy people and communities.

We do not buy - OR - grow any seed from large corporations that make Genetically Engineered seeds.  We don't touch that stuff and we never will.

The seeds we offer aren't like varieties you'd typically find at a garden center.

Every variety we offer is 100% OP (open-pollinated).  Open-pollination means that you can safely save the seed after harvest and preserve a collection of heirloom seed for many generations to come.

To make it perfectly clear ... Our seeds do not contain any exogenously inserted embryogenesis deactivator genes caused by human intervention.
